Jennifer Lee Carrell - The Shakespeare Secret
aka Interred with Their Bones
2007 - Unabridged - mp3 - 128 kbps

Jennifer Lee Carrell, an English literature scholar, has taken a Da Vinci Code approach to Shakespeare: what if Shakespeare wrote another, undiscovered play, whose plot contained political secrets that are key parts of British history? The resulting novel, Interred with Their Bones, is a fast-paced but literate thriller featuring a Shakespeare scholar heroine who races across the globe following clues and trying to find the secret manuscript she suspects exists.

This engaging book draws on all of Shakespeare's plays to show they can still be used as a guide to life.

* Focuses on the characters, situations and stories in Shakespeare which are still familiar today.
* Shows how Shakespeare's plays illustrate some of life's most familiar stories - love and obsession, parents and children, sex and politics, suffering and revenge
* Makes Shakespeare's plays accessible to the widest possible audience.

This beginner’s guide to Shakespeare reminds us that the main reason people still watch and read Shakespeare’s plays is because they identify with the characters and situations depicted in them.

Drawing on all of Shakespeare’s plays, Laurie Maguire shows how they illustrate some of life’s most familiar stories – love and obsession, parents and children, sex and politics, suffering and revenge.

The book groups the stories into five broad categories, moving from those concerned with personal identity to those dealing with romance and marriage, family life, politics, and public life. This thematic arrangement makes the plays accessible to the widest possible audience, and helps readers grasp the connection between the issues addressed by the plays and those of our own time.

eBook: The Anxiety of Influence; A Theory Of Poetry by Harrold Bloom

The Anxiety of Influence - A Theory Of Poetry
by Harold Bloom

2nd Edition

"The most significant work that the gifted scholar-critic, Harold
Bloom, has yet written." Commonwealth
Harold Bloom's The Anxiety of Influence has cast its long shadow of
influence since it. was first published in 1973. Through an insightful
study of Romantic poets, Bloom puts forth his central vision of the
relations between precursor's and the individual artist. His arguments
that all literary texts are a strong misreading of those that precede
them had an enormous impact on the practice of criticism and post-structuralist
literary theory. The book remains a central work of criticism
for all students of literature.

Written in a moving personal style, anchored by concrete examples,
and memorable quotations, this second edition of Bloom's classic work
maintains that the anxiety of influence can not be evadcd
by either by poets nor by responsible readers and critics. A
new introduction, centering upon Shakespeare and Matlowe,
explains the genesis of Bloom's thinking, and the subsequent influence
of the book on literary criticism of the past quarter of a century.

The Anxiety of Influence, Second Edition provides a new generation
of scholars, students, and layreaders a welcome addition to the Bloom
canon.

eBook: The Man Shakespeare and his Tragic Life - Frank Harris

The Man Shakespeare and his Tragic Life
by Frank Harris

Frank Harris (1855-1931) is known today almost exclusively for his scandalous memoir "My Life and Loves", but aside from that he played a central role in letters around the turn of the century, and was a fine writer whose many other works deserve renewed attention in this new millennium.

First published in 1909, "The Man Shakespeare and his Tragic Life" is a lively biography of England and arguably the world's greatest playwright and poet by an ardent admirer. Pursuing the thesis that a man so elusive in the few surviving documents is found full blown in very one of his works, Frank Harris, a successful journalist and editor, turns his hand to creating an impressionistic portrait that is at once a highly idiosyncratic exploration of the plays and a telling of the life through them.A product of late-Victorian Bardolatry, Harris' "The Man Shakespeare and his Tragic Life" was both hailed and criticised in its day, the "New York Times" reviewer declaring that 'This is the book for which we have waited a lifetime', while academic critics attacked it as 'nonsense'. Controversial and self-confident, this biographical study retains its interest as a work of period charm. Bristling with fresh, if not always convincing, arguments, combative in style, and with a full battery of belletristic effects, Harris, as ever, pulls off a tour de force.

EXTRA: When George Bernard Shaw's play "The Dark Lady Of The Sonnets" was produced, there was quite a contoversy when Harris accused Shaw of plagiarizing his work. The following PDF file is a very interesting 1911 newspaper account, from The New York Times, about their feud:

Shaw also addresses this controversy in his intoduction to The Dark Lady Of The Sonnets.

eBook: The Dark Lady Of The Sonnets - George Bernard Shaw

The Dark Lady Of The Sonnets
George Bernard Shaw

An imaginary adventure between William Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth. Will Shakespeare goes to the palace to meet the Dark Lady to whom he addressed his sonnets of love, only to find instead the Queen herself taking a walk before retiring. He is so fascinated by her – keeps writing down her bon mots – that he does not notice the approach of his Dark Lady, who is furiously jealous and gives them both a drubbing in the dark. Both poet and prince meet in agreement that man does not live by bread alone.

When George Bernard Shaw wrote this piece, in 1910, he had hopes of it serving as a fundraiser in aid of establishing a National Theatre School in Britain, to honour the works of Shakespeare. It would be more than half a century later before this dream would be realized.

eBook: The Truth Will Out: Unmasking the Real Shakespeare

The Truth Will Out
Unmasking the Real Shakespeare

By Brenda James and William D Rubinstein

1.4MB, .pdf

William Shakespeare is one of the most elusive and mysterious men in history. Virtually everything known about the facts of his life seems to belie the extraordinary genius of “his” plays and poems.

As a result, over the past century and a half, many intelligent and perceptive people have come to the conclusion that Shakespeare was a ‘front man’ or ‘smoke screen’ for the true author of the works.

Based on five years of in-depth research, Brenda James and William D Rubinstein’s book The Truth Will Out unveils the most compelling candidate as the author of the greatest works in English literature.
The discovery came as Brenda James was working on trying to discover the identity of the mysterious Mr W H, mentioned in the Dedication to the Sonnets. What emerged from her work amazed her. The code revealed the phrase “thy poet” and the name of Sir Henry Neville, a now forgotten Elizabethan politician and landowner.
Intrigued but needing more information she started to research Neville. One remarkable discovery led to another, most based on previously unknown primary documentary evidence. Finally she was convinced by the shear weight of evidence. She realised that she had discovered the identity of man who had written the greatest works in English Literature.

To confirm her findings she approached Professor William D Rubinstein, an influential figure in the authorship debate and an Associate of The Shakespeare Authorship Trust. At that time he was an agnostic in the debate, unconvinced by any of the known candidates. He was so totally convinced that he agreed to revise and co-author the book, bringing his substantial expertise to the work.

Together they believe that Brenda James’s truly incredible discovery has, at a stroke, solved comprehensively and categorically all the mysteries and puzzles surrounding the world’s greatest literary genius.

eBook: Think On My Words: Exploring Shakespeare's Language

Think On My Words: Exploring Shakespeare's Language
By David Crystal

File size: 2.2 MB

'You speak a language that I understand not.' Hermione's words to Leontes in The Winter's Tale are likely to ring true with many people reading or watching Shakespeare's plays today. For decades, people have been studying Shakespeare's life and times, and in recent years there has been a renewed surge of interest into aspects of his language. So how can we better understand Shakespeare? How did he manipulate language to produce such an unrivalled body of work, which has enthralled generations both as theatre and as literature? David Crystal addresses these and many other questions in this lively and original introduction to Shakespeare's language. Covering in turn the five main dimensions of language structure - writing system, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and conversational style - the book shows how examining these linguistic 'nuts and bolts' can help us achieve a greater appreciation of Shakespeare's linguistic creativity.

Music: GrooveLily - A Little Midsummer Night's Music (2006)

GrooveLily - A Little Midsummer Night's Music
This CD documents the songs New York trio GrooveLily wrote and performed for director Tina Landau's musical take on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Don't be fooled by an album title that brings to mind A Little Night Music, however. We are not in Sondheim territory here, but in a benign, lite-jazzy, lite-funky environment. In the liner notes, Landau explains that the show was "GrooveLily's dream of Shakespeare's play." And so the band, led by violinist-singer Valerie Vigoda, wrote (and performed onstage) songs inspired by the characters; they are grouped thematically on the CD.

1. When I Dream
2. Overture
3. Titania Suite
4. Fairy Suite
5. Malevolent Oberon Suite
6. While You Were Sleeping
7. Lysander Wakes: And Run Through Fire
8. Demitrius Wakes: Oh, Helen
9. Benevolent Oberon Suite
10. Slings of Eros/Bergomask Dance/Bows
11. All Shall Be Well

Audiobook: The Cat Who Knew Shakespeare

The Cat Who Knew Shakespeare

Written by Lilian Jackson Braun

Summary (From the publisher):
There's something rotten in the small town of Pickax--at least to the sensitive noses of the newspaperman Jim Qwilleran and his Siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum. An accident has claimed the life of the local paper's eccentric publisher, but to Qwilleran and his feline friends it smells like murder. They soon sniff out a shocking secret, but Koko's snooping into an unusual edition of Shakespeare may prove CATastrophic... because somewhere in Pickax a lady loves not wisely but too well, a widow is scandalously merry, and a stranger has a lean and hungry look. The stage is set for Qwilleran, Koko, Yum Yum, and the second act of murder most meow....

Music: John Dowland - The Complete Solo Lute Music

John Dowland - The Complete Solo Lute Music

256kbps
John Dowland (1563 - 1626)

Right, pay attention at the back there!

Pretty much an exact contemporary of Shakespeare, this guy was one of the most famous composers in late and post-Elizabethan England.

Dowland to thee is dear, whose heavenly touch
Upon the lute doth ravish human sense;
-William Shakespeare - The Passionate Pilgrim. Sonnet 8

In 1580 he went to Paris, presumably apprenticed to a professional lutenist, under the patronage of the English ambassador. Returning to England in 1586, he married and in 1588 was admitted to his degree of Bachelor of Music from Christ Church, Oxford.

After being rejected for a court post as a lutenist (possibly because of his Catholicism) in 1594, he goes off to the various royal courts that existed in Europe at that time to seek his fortune.

Although he must have been well known as early as 1597 (as his first book was subsequently republished 4 times), he continued to be denied a post at the English court until 1612.

So, what do we have here?

This is 92 tracks of solo lute music written, for the most part, to be danced to. A lot of this stuff is titled "Mr So and So's Pavane" (a slow processional dance) or "Mrs Blah Blah's Galliard" (a more boisterous affair and a favourite of Elizabeth I) . You'll also see "Almain" and "Jig" used pretty liberally in the titles.

By and large (to my ears anyway), you're gonna be downloading slowed-down flamenco, with the famous, must-haves being "Lachrimae", "Semper Dowland Semper Dolens" and "Frog Galliard".

This really is "music you should hear before you die".
