The Castaways perform a musical version of Hamlet.
In the Hamlet musical from the Gilligan's Island episode, "The Producer", Gilligan, as Hamlet, sings a variation of the "To Be or Not To Be" soliloquy to the tune of Habanera from Bizet's Carmen!
This is very entertaining and highly recommended!

Audio Book: Hark! by Ed McBain

Ed McBain 87th Precinct 54. Hark! (2004)
-A modern detective novel with a Shakespearean theme.

The 87th Precinct gets a visit from one of the city's most accomplished criminals -- a thief known as the Deaf Man. Because he might be deaf. Or he might not. So little is known about the man who is harassing Detective Steve Carella with puzzling messages that it is hard to tell. But as soon as a pattern emerges, the detectives of the 87th are forced to hit the books and brush up on their Shakespeare -- because each new clue contains a line from one of his works. Unless they can crack the complicated riddles and beat the Deaf Man at his own cat-and-mouse game, someone is going to end up hurt, or something will be stolen -- or both. It's always so hard to tell with the Deaf Man.

Music: Twelfth Night (1996) -Soundtrack

Here is Shaun Davey's soundtrack for Twelfth Night. I found this link at Vinnie Rattolle's Records, an excellent soundtrack blog (go visit him!), here is his description:
If music be the food of love, play on...

On the twelfth night of Christmas, my true love gave to me... a soundtrack that's practically impossible to find! A friend has been searching for the soundtrack for the 1996 version of William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night: Or What You Will," but the album received a limited pressing, it's long out of print and sells for astronomical prices. I didn't think I was gonna find it -- until I stumbled into a site where Lareinenoire quite graciously uploaded it for me. Far be it from me to sit on something that's so rare. So Chadrenne, merry Christmas, and Lareinenoire, thanks again!

The score is by Shaun Davey and star Ben Kingsley sings on more than a handful of tracks. I'm usually not a big fan of Shakespeare (with the exception of the demented "Theatre of Blood"... and "Strange Brew!"), but after hearing this, I think I need to see the movie!

eBook: Shakespeare and Modern Theatre

Shakespeare and Modern Theatre

Author: M. Bristol
Publisher: Routledge
File size: 33947 KB
File type: pdf
Shakespeare's works are now performed for an increasingly diversified cultural market. At the start of the twenty-first century, film, video, and live performance have overtaken the printed book as the main way people are introduced to Shakespeare. Therefore, is there any reason to read Shakespeare's plays anymore? The essays in this volume explore the question and the institutional practices that shape contemporary performances of Shakespeare's plays. The book gathers together a particularly strong line-up of contributors from across the literary-performative divide to examine the relationship between Shakespeare, the "culture industries," modernism, and live performance.

eBook: Shakespeare's Brain

Shakespeare's Brain

Mary Thomas Crane
Princeton University Press | ISBN: 0691069921 | 2000-12-15 | 288 pages | PDF | 1 Mb
Here Mary Thomas Crane considers the brain as a site where body and culture meet to form the subject and its expression in language. Taking Shakespeare as her case study, she boldly demonstrates the explanatory power of cognitive theory--a theory which argues that language is produced by a reciprocal interaction of body and environment, brain and culture, and which refocuses attention on the role of the author in the making of meaning. Crane reveals in Shakespeare's texts a web of structures and categories through which meaning is created. The approach yields fresh insights into a wide range of his plays, including The Comedy of Errors, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Hamlet, Measure for Measure, and The Tempest.

Crane's cognitive reading traces the complex interactions of cultural and cognitive determinants of meaning as they play themselves out in Shakespeare's texts. She shows how each play centers on a word or words conveying multiple meanings (such as "act," "pinch," "pregnant," "villain and clown"), and how each cluster has been shaped by early modern ideological formations. The book also chronicles the playwright's developing response to the material conditions of subject formation in early modern England. Crane reveals that Shakespeare in his comedies first explored the social spaces within which the subject is formed, such as the home, class hierarchy, and romantic courtship. His later plays reveal a greater preoccupation with how the self is formed within the body, as the embodied mind seeks to make sense of and negotiate its physical and social environment.

eBook: Peter Brook - The Empty Space: A Book About the Theatre

Peter Brook - 'The Empty Space: A Book About the Theatre: Deadly, Holy, Rough, Immediate'
Peter Brook's career, beginning in the 1940s with radical productions of Shakespeare with a modern experimental sensibility and continuing to his recent work in the worlds of opera and epic theater, makes him perhaps the most influential director of the 20th century. Cofounder of the Royal Shakespeare Company and director of the International Center for Theater Research in Paris, perhaps Brook's greatest legacy will be The Empty Space. His 1968 book divides the theatrical landscape, as Brook saw it, into four different types: the Deadly Theater (the conventional theater, formulaic and unsatisfying), the Holy Theater (which seeks to rediscover ritual and drama's spiritual dimension, best expressed by the writings of Artaud and the work of director Jerzy Grotowski), the Rough Theater (a theater of the people, against pretension and full of noise and action, best typified by the Elizabethan theater), and the Immediate Theater, which Brook identifies his own career with, an attempt to discover a fluid and ever-changing style that emphasizes the joy of the theatrical experience. What differentiates Brook's writing from so many other theatrical gurus is its extraordinary clarity. His gentle illumination of the four types of theater is conversational, even chatty, and though passionately felt, it's entirely lacking in the sort of didactic bombast that flaws many similar texts.

eBook: Shakespeare and the Origins of English

Shakespeare and the Origins of English

Author: Neil Rhodes
Publisher: Oxford University Press
File size: 1,1 MB
File type: PDF

What existed before there was a subject known as English? How did English eventually come about? Focusing specifically on Shakespeare's role in the origins of the subject, Neil Rhodes addresses the evolution of English from the early modern period up to the late eighteenth century. He deals with the kinds of literary and educational practices that would have formed Shakespeare's experience and shaped his work and traces the origins of English in certain aspects of the educational regime that existed before English literature became an established part of the curriculum. Rhodes then presents Shakespeare both as a product of Renaissance rhetorical teaching and as an agent of the transformation of English in the eighteenth century into the subject that emerged as the modern study of English.

By transferring terms from contemporary disciplines, such as 'media studies' and "creative writing", or the technology of computing, to earlier cultural contexts Rhodes aims both to invite further reflection on the nature of the practices themselves, and also to offer new ways of thinking about their relationship to the discipline of English. Shakespeare and the Origins of English attempts not only an explanation of where English came from, but suggests how some of the things that we do now in the name of "English" might usefully be understood in a wider historical perspective. By extending our view of its past, we may achieve a clearer view of its future.

eBook: Cambridge Introduction to Shakespeare's Comedies

Cambridge Introduction to Shakespeare's Comedies
Author: Penny Gay
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
File size: 713 KB
File type: pdf

Why did theatre audiences laugh in Shakespeare's day? Why do they still laugh now? What did Shakespeare do with the conventions of comedy that he inherited, so that his plays continue to amuse and move audiences? What do his comedies have to say about love, sex, gender, power, family, community, and class? What place have pain, cruelty, and even death in a comedy? Why all those puns? In a survey that travels from Shakespeare's earliest experiments in farce and courtly love-stories to the great romantic comedies of his middle years and the mould-breaking experiments of his last decade's work, this book addresses these vital questions. Organised thematically, and covering all Shakespeare's comedies from the beginning to the end of his career, it provides readers with a map of the playwright's comic styles, showing how he built on comedic conventions as he further enriched the possibilities of the genre.

Music: Prokofiev - Romeo and Juliet (1995); Danmarks Radiosymfoniorkester, Dmitri Kitajenko, WMA lossless

Romeo and Juliet (Prokofiev)
Classical | WMA lossless | 2CDs | 151min | 605MB | RS

Romeo and Juliet (Op. 64) is a ballet by Sergei Prokofiev based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Music from the ballet was extracted by Prokofiev as three suites for orchestra and as a piano work.

The ballet was composed in 1935 and 1936 as commissioned by the Kirov Ballet, with a happy ending, but was never publicly mounted, partly due to increased fear and caution in the musical and theatrical community in the aftermath of the two notorious Pravda editorials criticising Shostakovich and other degenerate modernists. Prokofiev's efforts resulted in suites from the music being heard in Moscow and the United States, but the produced ballet actually premiered in Brno, Czechoslovakia, on 30 December 1938. It is better known from the significantly revised version that was first presented at the Kirov in Leningrad on 11 January 1940, with choreography by Leonid Lavrovsky, to which Prokofiev objected.

In 1962 John Cranko's choreography of Romeo and Juliet for the Stuttgart Ballet helped the company achieve a worldwide reputation. In 1965 a production that was choreographed by Sir Kenneth MacMillan for the Royal Ballet premiered at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in which Rudolph Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn brought new life to the characters, and Fonteyn, considered to be near retirement, embarked upon a rejuvenated career.

“ This program is specifically related to Shakespeare, although should probably not be taken to consist precisely of music performed during or around his plays. Most of the material, however, is derived from them. In other cases, it should perhaps be taken more as representative of the general music-making. ”

Music: Alec R. Costandinos & The Syncophonic Orchestra - Romeo & Juliet (1978 Disco!)

Alec R. Costandinos & The Syncophonic Orchestra - Romeo & Juliet

The king of the eurodisco sound in the 1970's. Alec wrote for and produced many disco artists including Love and Kisses, Don Ray, Tony Rallo, Cerrone, Paris Connection, Sphinx, Sumeria and Alan Hawkshaw.
Alec's "solo" albums contain some of the greatest eurodisco tracks of all time. His albums often had a historical or classical theme, the best known of these being "Romeo and Juliet", which was used in the disco movie "Thank God it's Friday" (although it was not on the soundtrack album). His film scores included Trocadero Lemon Blue, containing the classic "Trocadero suite" and the brilliant "Grooves (introduction)". The film is based around kid's roller skating life in Paris in the 1970's. "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" follows in the footsteps of "Romeo & Juliet". These bouncy basslines and thumping disco beats are Alec's trademark; for an example, listen to the introduction to "Winds of change". This was another film score he did for an obscure feature-length animation. Most of Alec's albums were recorded in the Trident studios in London, and featured background vocals by the Birds of Paris.

Film: The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) -The Reduced Shakespeare Company

Three guys, one dead playwright, and 37 plays, all in under two hours. In this universally acclaimed theater experience, Adam Long (one of the troupe's founding members), Reed Marin, and Austin Tichenor manage to compress the complete works of Shakespeare into about an hour and 40 minutes of high-speed over-the-top hilarity. Knowledge about Shakespeare's works is helpful, but not at all necessary. All that is needed is time enough to watch and someone to dial 911 in case you pass out from laughing so much.
