Film: Filming 'Othello' (1978) - Orson Welles

Filming 'Othello' (1978)

Wonderful. If you are a Welles fan, this is a must-see!

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077547/

The last completed essay film of Orson Welles, and the last of his features to be released during his lifetime (1979), this wonderfully candid, rarely screened account of the making of his first wholly independent feature offers a perfect introduction to that movie and to Welles's "second" manner of moviemaking that was necessary once he parted company with the studios and mainstream media. Significantly, the only part of Othello we see and hear in its original form is from the opening sequence; everything else--usually shown silently with Welles's narration--involves an intricate reediting of the original material. Whether he's addressing us beside his moviola, delivering new versions of Shakespearean speeches, chatting with his old Irish friends and collaborators Micheal MacLiammoir (his Iago) and Hilton Edwards, or speaking to college students, Welles is at his spellbinding best.

Music: Uri Caine Ensemble - The Othello Syndrome (2008) (Experimental Jazz)

Uri Caine Ensemble - The Othello Syndrome (2008)
1 CD | Mp3 320 mbps | 174 Mb | Winter & Winter

Addressing the output of classical composers seems eventually to have become the dominant thrust of keyboardist Uri Caine's work. Schumann, Wagner, Bach, Beethoven and Mahler have fallen to sometimes radical re-posturing of their grand scores. Caine messes with the old assumed interpretations, deliberately distorting the usual expectations of performance by inserting elements of jazz, rock, funk, soul, blues, hip hop and electronica, always utilizing a cast of players from a broad range of backgrounds.

Now, it's a Verdi mash-up. Othello is similarly dissected, analyzed, reshuffled and responded to, making an opera that could possibly possess appeal among the united front of opera-loathers. The expected schizophrenic changes ensue, quite like a lyrically marshmallowed John Zorn. Or like a house-trained Frank Zappa. Or even like a Hal Willner project from Beyondsville. This work debuted at the 2003 Venice Biennale and was mostly recorded two years later, aside from the odd overdubbed drop-in.

Caine seeks grandiloquent melodrama one moment, komic kapering vaudeville the next. He preserves the pomp, but also sets off the pearl necklace detonators at the soiree. His vocalists arrive from diverse zones: Bunny Sigler (Philly soul on the Met stage), Dhafer Youssef (taking Moorish flight), Sadiq Bey (rap-poetic toughness), Josefine Lindstrand (ethereal balladry), Marco Paolini (Italian theatricality) and Julie Patton (cooled narration). Musicians include Ralph Alessi (trumpet), Zach Danziger (drums), Joyce Hammann (violin), Nguyen Le (guitar), Tim Lefebvre (bass), Stefano Bassanese and Bruno Fabrizio Sorba (electronics), although several more are on-hand for guest appearances. --All About Jazz

Film: Othello, 2001, Eamonn Walker

Othello, 2001, Eamonn Walker

This modern crime drama uses the names of the homonymous Shakespeare play's main characters which inspired its plot. White London Metropolitan Police commissioner Sinclair Carver promises to maintain law and order and further racial integration by recruiting and promoting black and Asian officers, but is taped in the lavatory by a tabloid reporter telling his assistant commissioner Ben Jago there is no black with a brain as big as his dick, and is thus forced to resign. When the death of the black Billy Coates in custody causes racial unrest, John Othello, the only authoritative black police officer, manages to prevent riots by pointing to the press and promising to solve the case; the government names him successor to Carver over his friend Jago's head. The ambitious Ben doesn't show his furious disappointment, but must have his revenge. His plots starts by making sure racists harass Othello's white wife Desdemona, so he can have her 'well guarded' by smooth white superintendent Michael Cass, and then makes John believe he's a bit too friendly with her. Meanwhile he makes sure the Coates investigation ends in an innocent young cop's suicide and a mistrial. Now he plants false DNA proof of Dessie's infidelity - will Othello, who believes his world is crashing down, actually bring it on himself in despair?

Professor Sanders provides a full analysis of the textual problem and theories of transmission of Othello, and offers possible solutions to the stylistic and racial problems which face modern readers and spectators. His edition includes contemporary maps of Venice and Cyprus, photographs of famous actors who have played the leading roles, and reconstructions of staging at the Globe and Blackfriars Theatres.

For this updated edition, Scott McMillin has added a new section on the key events in both scholarship and theatre since the 1980s, including political, feminist and postcolonial treatments in various parts of the world. The influence of new historicism and cultural materialism are also taken into account, and a description of performances of the play on stage, film and television tackles the issue of black/white casting of the main characters.

Film: Othello, 1922, Emil Jannings, Werner Krauss

IMDb Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0013469/

Director: Dimitri Buchowetzki
Cast:
Emil Jannings ... Othello
Werner Krauss ... Iago
Ica von Lenkeffy ... Desdemona
Theodor Loos ... Cassio
Ferdinand von Alten ... Rodrigo
Friedrich Kühne ... Brabantio
Magnus Stifter ... Montano
Lya De Putti ... Emilia
Ludwig Rex

Full length 1922 silent version of Othello with English titles.

Description: This atmospheric and very interesting adaptation of Shakespeare's "Othello" adds a good dose of German silent film style to the classic story of jealousy and deceit. Although at times the emphasis is placed somewhat differently than in the original, the adaptation shows good judgment in highlighting the themes and sequences that would work the best on the silent screen. The basic story holds closely to the plot of the play. Emil Jannings makes a fine Othello, since his emotional style fits the volatile character well. Werner Krauss is particularly memorable as Iago. Of the main characters, Iago is the one who comes across most differently from the role in the play - here he is jaunty rather than sullen, an evil genius who shows obvious relish in each step of his malicious plans. The character and Krauss's performance work quite well for a movie adaptation. Another interesting difference is that here Emilia's role is enlarged and given more importance, in comparison with the play. The emphasis is, as it should be in Shakespeare, on the characters; but the photography, settings, and the rest of the production are all of good quality as well. It's quite a good version of the story for a movie made in the early 1920s. ~Snow Leopard, IMDb

Film: Othello, 1965, Laurence Olivier

Othello (1965)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059555/

It's Olivier. In blackface.
It's Othello. It's good in spite of Olivier in blackface.

Description: This is the best film of a Shakespeare play that I have ever seen. (Throne of Blood is a great movie, but it's an adaptation, not really Shakespeare's Macbeth.) What makes the difference for me are the outstanding performances by the entire cast, not just Olivier. Maggie Smith's Desdemona is truly touching as a woman overwhelmed by fate. A young Derek Jacobi hits all the right notes as Michael Cassio: smart, loyal, eager to please, but a little immature. I haven't seen any other roles played by either Frank Finlay or Joyce Redman, but in any case, they're excellent here. I much prefer Olivier's Othello to his film role as Hamlet. That's because too many of Hamlet's lines were cut from that version. More text gives more characterization to Othello, and gives Olivier the chance to really fill the role, which he does beautifully. My only real complaint is that on the videotape, the widescreen picture is cropped too much. Everybody who is a fan of Shakespeare or any of the above mentioned actors should see this movie! ~Peter J. Cockerham, IMDb

Audio play: Othello (Donmar Production 2007-08)

Stars:
Chiwetel Ejiofor (Othello)
Ewan McGregor (Iago)
Kelly Reilly (Desdemona)

Cast of the Donmar production 2007-8

The cast of the Donmar Warehouse’s sellout production of Othello has recorded a CD version of the play for Naxos AudioBooks. “Othello” ran between November 2007 and February 2008 in London’s West End. The cast featured Chiwetel Ejiofor as Othello, Ewan McGregor as Iago, and Kelly Reilly as the Desdemona. Chiwetel Ejiofor won the 2008 Olivier Award for best actor for his performance, beating out Sir Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart.
The cast spent three days during the last week of the stage production recording the CD. Michael Grandage, the director of the stage production, oversaw the transfer from stage to audio recording.
Prior being released on CD, the recording was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in early May.
The CD also features Adam Cork’s music written specifically for the stage production. According to a Naxos press release, “The idea was to reproduce as closely as possible the stage production, while making the most of the strengths of audiobook/radio – very intimate close-ups and intensity of dialogue.”
