The final volume in Chandos's brilliant series of Walton's film scores offers the world première recording of his music from Richard III (1955), the third entry in Laurence Olivier's Shakespearean triptych. Though the music was always well-regarded as part of Olivier's classic film, arranger Christopher Palmer gives the score a fresh lease on life through a newly conceived, 10-movement scenario for orchestra. Adding immeasurably to the impact is the narration by John Gielgud, who presides over Walton's simultaneously heroic and introspective score in full command of his formidable vocal instrument. A brief, six-minute suite from Gielgud's wartime production of Macbeth is also impressive. Anticipating Walton's score for Henry V (1944), the suite features pseudo-Elizabethan dance music, a fanfare, and a haunting funeral march. Gabriel Pascal's Major Barbara (1941) was a caustic comedy starring Wendy Hiller, whose efforts to save souls in the Salvation army are upstaged by her money-wielding father (Robert Morley). Walton's music accentuates the film's heartfelt aspects, most notably in a Ravelian waltz for children. His grand choral work, Belshazzar's Feast, influences a key factory scene, while a gorgeous love theme underscores Hiller's romance with suitor Rex Harrison. By the time the grand finale is reached, every Waltonian is completely grateful for Palmer's efforts in realising this exemplary series.

Addressing the output of classical composers seems eventually to have become the dominant thrust of keyboardist Uri Caine's work. Schumann, Wagner, Bach, Beethoven and Mahler have fallen to sometimes radical re-posturing of their grand scores. Caine messes with the old assumed interpretations, deliberately distorting the usual expectations of performance by inserting elements of jazz, rock, funk, soul, blues, hip hop and electronica, always utilizing a cast of players from a broad range of backgrounds.

Now, it's a Verdi mash-up. Othello is similarly dissected, analyzed, reshuffled and responded to, making an opera that could possibly possess appeal among the united front of opera-loathers. The expected schizophrenic changes ensue, quite like a lyrically marshmallowed John Zorn. Or like a house-trained Frank Zappa. Or even like a Hal Willner project from Beyondsville. This work debuted at the 2003 Venice Biennale and was mostly recorded two years later, aside from the odd overdubbed drop-in.

Caine seeks grandiloquent melodrama one moment, komic kapering vaudeville the next. He preserves the pomp, but also sets off the pearl necklace detonators at the soiree. His vocalists arrive from diverse zones: Bunny Sigler (Philly soul on the Met stage), Dhafer Youssef (taking Moorish flight), Sadiq Bey (rap-poetic toughness), Josefine Lindstrand (ethereal balladry), Marco Paolini (Italian theatricality) and Julie Patton (cooled narration). Musicians include Ralph Alessi (trumpet), Zach Danziger (drums), Joyce Hammann (violin), Nguyen Le (guitar), Tim Lefebvre (bass), Stefano Bassanese and Bruno Fabrizio Sorba (electronics), although several more are on-hand for guest appearances. --All About Jazz

This CD documents the songs New York trio GrooveLily wrote and performed for director Tina Landau's musical take on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Don't be fooled by an album title that brings to mind A Little Night Music, however. We are not in Sondheim territory here, but in a benign, lite-jazzy, lite-funky environment. In the liner notes, Landau explains that the show was "GrooveLily's dream of Shakespeare's play." And so the band, led by violinist-singer Valerie Vigoda, wrote (and performed onstage) songs inspired by the characters; they are grouped thematically on the CD.

Right, pay attention at the back there!

Pretty much an exact contemporary of Shakespeare, this guy was one of the most famous composers in late and post-Elizabethan England.

Dowland to thee is dear, whose heavenly touch
Upon the lute doth ravish human sense;
-William Shakespeare - The Passionate Pilgrim. Sonnet 8

In 1580 he went to Paris, presumably apprenticed to a professional lutenist, under the patronage of the English ambassador. Returning to England in 1586, he married and in 1588 was admitted to his degree of Bachelor of Music from Christ Church, Oxford.

After being rejected for a court post as a lutenist (possibly because of his Catholicism) in 1594, he goes off to the various royal courts that existed in Europe at that time to seek his fortune.

Although he must have been well known as early as 1597 (as his first book was subsequently republished 4 times), he continued to be denied a post at the English court until 1612.

So, what do we have here?

This is 92 tracks of solo lute music written, for the most part, to be danced to. A lot of this stuff is titled "Mr So and So's Pavane" (a slow processional dance) or "Mrs Blah Blah's Galliard" (a more boisterous affair and a favourite of Elizabeth I) . You'll also see "Almain" and "Jig" used pretty liberally in the titles.

By and large (to my ears anyway), you're gonna be downloading slowed-down flamenco, with the famous, must-haves being "Lachrimae", "Semper Dowland Semper Dolens" and "Frog Galliard".

This really is "music you should hear before you die".

On the twelfth night of Christmas, my true love gave to me... a soundtrack that's practically impossible to find! A friend has been searching for the soundtrack for the 1996 version of William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night: Or What You Will," but the album received a limited pressing, it's long out of print and sells for astronomical prices. I didn't think I was gonna find it -- until I stumbled into a site where Lareinenoire quite graciously uploaded it for me. Far be it from me to sit on something that's so rare. So Chadrenne, merry Christmas, and Lareinenoire, thanks again!

The score is by Shaun Davey and star Ben Kingsley sings on more than a handful of tracks. I'm usually not a big fan of Shakespeare (with the exception of the demented "Theatre of Blood"... and "Strange Brew!"), but after hearing this, I think I need to see the movie!

Romeo and Juliet (Op. 64) is a ballet by Sergei Prokofiev based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Music from the ballet was extracted by Prokofiev as three suites for orchestra and as a piano work.

The ballet was composed in 1935 and 1936 as commissioned by the Kirov Ballet, with a happy ending, but was never publicly mounted, partly due to increased fear and caution in the musical and theatrical community in the aftermath of the two notorious Pravda editorials criticising Shostakovich and other degenerate modernists. Prokofiev's efforts resulted in suites from the music being heard in Moscow and the United States, but the produced ballet actually premiered in Brno, Czechoslovakia, on 30 December 1938. It is better known from the significantly revised version that was first presented at the Kirov in Leningrad on 11 January 1940, with choreography by Leonid Lavrovsky, to which Prokofiev objected.

In 1962 John Cranko's choreography of Romeo and Juliet for the Stuttgart Ballet helped the company achieve a worldwide reputation. In 1965 a production that was choreographed by Sir Kenneth MacMillan for the Royal Ballet premiered at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in which Rudolph Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn brought new life to the characters, and Fonteyn, considered to be near retirement, embarked upon a rejuvenated career.

Alec R. Costandinos & The Syncophonic Orchestra - Romeo & Juliet

The king of the eurodisco sound in the 1970's. Alec wrote for and produced many disco artists including Love and Kisses, Don Ray, Tony Rallo, Cerrone, Paris Connection, Sphinx, Sumeria and Alan Hawkshaw.
Alec's "solo" albums contain some of the greatest eurodisco tracks of all time. His albums often had a historical or classical theme, the best known of these being "Romeo and Juliet", which was used in the disco movie "Thank God it's Friday" (although it was not on the soundtrack album). His film scores included Trocadero Lemon Blue, containing the classic "Trocadero suite" and the brilliant "Grooves (introduction)". The film is based around kid's roller skating life in Paris in the 1970's. "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" follows in the footsteps of "Romeo & Juliet". These bouncy basslines and thumping disco beats are Alec's trademark; for an example, listen to the introduction to "Winds of change". This was another film score he did for an obscure feature-length animation. Most of Alec's albums were recorded in the Trident studios in London, and featured background vocals by the Birds of Paris.
